Pseudo หรือ Fake Documentary มันก็คือภาพยนตร์นะแหละ (Fictional Films) แต่ด้วยวิธีการนำเสนอสไตล์สารคดี จำลองสถานการณ์ราวกับเกิดขึ้นจริง พูดคุยสัมภาษณ์นักแสดง ทำออกมาในลักษณะ Newsreel นั่นกระมังจึงยังถูกจัดเข้าพวกสารคดี ได้รับการโหวตติดอันดับ “Greatest Documentary of All-Time” จากหลายๆสำนัก

ผมรับรู้จักภาพยนตร์/สารคดี The War Game (1966) มาตั้งแต่เขียนบทความ Edvard Munch (1974) ประทับใจแนวทางการนำเสนอของผกก. Peter Watkins ตีความการถือกำเนิดลัทธิสำแดงพลังอารมณ์ (Expressionism) ได้อย่างยิ่งใหญ่! … เอาไว้เมื่อมีโอกาสจะหวนกลับไปปรับปรุงบทความนั้นด้วย
The War Game (1966) ก็ถือเป็นภาพยนตร์/สารคดีที่ยิ่งใหญ่ไม่แพ้กัน! เพราะสร้างขึ้นระหว่างสงครามเย็น (Cold War) ช่วงเวลาที่หมาอำนาจต่างเก็บสะสมอาวุธนิวเคลียร์ สงครามโลกครั้งพร้อมปะทุขึ้นได้ตลอดเวลา แต่ทว่ารัฐบาลกลับไม่เคยตระเตรียมการใดๆ จำลองสร้างสถานการณ์ว่าถ้าอังกฤษถูกโจมตี มันจะมีผลกระทบอะไรบังเกิดขึ้นบ้าง
ผมไม่ได้จัดให้ภาพยนตร์/สารคดีเรื่องนี้ “ต้องดูให้ได้ก่อนตาย” เพราะกาลเวลาพานผ่าน มาตรการ/วิธีการเอาตัวรอดทั้งหลาย(ในหนัง)ได้ปรับเปลี่ยนแปลงไป คนรุ่นใหม่(น่าจะ)มีความรู้เกี่ยวกับระเบิดนิวเคลียร์แพร่หลายมากขึ้น … แต่ถ้าคุณเป็นคนรักหนัง แนะนำเลยว่าไม่ควรพลาด!
Peter Watkins (เกิดปี ค.ศ. 1935) ผู้กำกับภาพยนตร์/สารคดี สัญชาติอังกฤษ เกิดที่ Norbiton, Surrey ช่วงระหว่างสงครามโลกครั้งที่สองยังไม่ค่อยประสีประสา แต่รับรู้ว่าครอบครัวต้องอพยพย้ายบ้านบ่อยครั้งเพื่อหาสถานที่ปลอดภัย โตขึ้นหลังรับใช้ชาติ East Surrey Regiment ฝึกฝนการแสดงยัง Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London จากนั้นเข้าร่วมคณะละคอนเวที Playcraft ต่อด้วยสถานีโทรทัศน์ BBC ไต่เต้าจากผู้ช่วยโปรดิวเซอร์ ผู้ช่วยตัดต่อ กำกับโฆษณา พัฒนาสไตล์ Newsreel-like สำหรับหนังสั้น The Diary of An Unknown Soldier (1959), The Forgotten Faces (1961), สารคดีเรื่องแรก Culloden (1964)
จุดเริ่มต้นของ The War Game (1966) เกิดขึ้นหลังจาก Harold Wilson ผู้นำพรรคแรงงาน ตอนหาเสียงประกาศว่าจะปลดอาวุธนิวเคลียร์ในสหราชอาณาจักร แต่หลังได้รับชัยชนะการเลือกตั้งขึ้นเป็นนายกรัฐมนตรี(สมัยแรก) กลับประกาศสานต่อพัฒนาอาวุธนิวเคลียร์ ซะงั้น!
เหตุการณ์ดังกล่าวสร้างความไม่พึงพอใจต่อสาธารณชนอย่างรุนแรง แต่ทว่าวงการโทรทัศน์กลับลังเลที่จะมีการพูดคุย แสดงความคิดเห็น ผกก. Watkins จึงเสนอโปรเจคจำลองสถานการณ์ ผลกระทบจากสงครามนิวเคลียร์ต่อสถานีโทรทัศน์ British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)
I therefore proposed to the BBC that – using one small corner of Kent in southeastern England to represent a microcosm – I make a film showing the possible effects, during an outbreak of war between NATO and the USSR, of a nuclear strike on Britain.

หลังจากโปรดิวเซอร์ที่ BBC อ่านบท The War Game แม้มีความสนใจแต่ก็เต็มไปด้วยความโล้เล้ลังเล เพราะถูกตักเตือนจากหน่วยงานความมั่นคง กระทรวงมหาดไทย แต่ทว่าผกก. Watkins ก็สรรหาข้ออ้างที่ทำให้หน่วยงานดังกล่าวยินยอมตอบอนุมัติโปรเจคนี้
This warning was a result of the British Home Office (in charge of Civil Defence, into which the government was pouring great amounts of money and propaganda) having telephoned the BBC to inquire why I was making a film on this subject. As part of my research, I had sent a letter to the Home Office inquiring how many hospital beds, etc. the Civil Defence would be able to provide following an all-out nuclear strike on the UK, and this had naturally prompted their query to the BBC.

I’d decided the areas to do it-three fairly big towns in Kent. I went to these towns and got the ball rolling by finding the local dramatic societies, or the local cine-societies. And these people bring in all their uncles and dads and the whole thing just snowballs, snowballs into a series of large meetings held in each town with usually a hundred or a hundred and fifty people attending, mostly from local drama groups—and I try and get them organized into the film. This usually works very well. I suppose if you count heads, I had about three hundred and fifty people in my last film.

I get it all on paper, and then I shoot and it all changes because of special circumstances of weather and people and all sorts of things. But I certainly try to start with a very detailed script, because you can’t improvise this sort of thing. It’s difficult enough to organize with a working script, but without it would be chaos. You’re not working with professional actors, so you’ve got to organize private people who are coming on their own time and the thing is an immense jigsaw puzzle to work out, to shoot.

ภาพยนตร์/สารคดีเรื่องนี้ไม่มีเพลงประกอบ เพราะเต็มไปด้วยบทสัมภาษณ์ เสียงบรรยาย และ Sound Effect ที่ดังกระหึมกลบหมดทุกสิ่งอย่าง ยกเว้นเพียง Closing Credit ทิ้งท้ายด้วย Stille Nacht, Silent Night แปลว่า Silent Night บทเพลงคริสต์มาส (Christmas Carol) ที่ใครๆคงรู้จักกันดี ประพันธ์โดย Franz Xaver Gruber จากคำร้องของ Joseph Mohr เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1818 … ปัจจุบันบทเพลงนี้ได้รับเลือกเป็น Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) โดยองก์การ UNESCO ตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2011
The War Game (1966) สร้างขึ้นระหว่างสงครามเย็น (Cold War) มีความเป็นไปได้ว่าประเทศมหาอำนาจจะโจมตีเกาะอังกฤษด้วยระเบิดนิวเคลียร์ แต่ทว่ารัฐบาลกลับไม่เคยตระเตรียมความพร้อม เผยแพร่ความรู้ ให้คำแนะนำประชาชนว่าควรต้องทำอะไรยังไงเมื่อบังเกิดเหตุการณ์ดังกล่าว
In the film, I quote from the British manual of the Home Office—these are really the villains of the piece—it’s written in 1959—”British public knowledge in the affairs of radio-activity will be made progressive in the next few years.” I then go to a totally genuine street-interview, and I ask a woman—”Do you know what Strontium 90 is?” and she says—”I think its a sort of gun powder, isn’t it?” Most people said they didn’t know. It’s appalling, absolutely appalling.

I attack the Bomb with all my might. If anyone sits through this film and comes out liking the Bomb, then they must have sat through it with both eyes shut. But I do not come out and say—”Britain must unilaterally disarm.” I leave that to the viewer himself.

In this film I was interested in breaking the illusion of media-produced ‘reality’. My question was – “Where is reality? … in the madness of statements by these artificially-lit establishment figures quoting the official doctrine of the day, or in the madness of the staged and fictional scenes from the rest of my film, which presented the consequences of their utterances?”- and to that end I consistently inter-cut said interviews. Obviously beyond and above the question of form was my concern to use the film to help people break the silence in the media on the nuclear arms race.

The War Game was one of the first films I saw in that film society. It won Best Documentary at the Academy Awards that year but it’s not a documentary. It’s what would happen if a nuclear bomb fell on London. It’s a black-and-white recreation of the breakdown of society after a nuclear attack, and to watch it as a teenager during the Cold War, as it was then, was pretty intense. It had such an effect on me. I’ve always remembered that film and the style in which it’s done. People think that the handheld camera and documentary realism is something new, but that film is the ultimate in shooting that style, as though you are just grabbing things. It’s actually all constructed, but it’s all constructed with non-actors, with real London people, in different parts of London.
It’s a pretty amazing film. You could say it’s dated now, because it’s grainy and it’s black-and-white, and it’s 16mm, but it’s still so effective to watch. It’s still not really been beaten in terms of its visceral connection to something like that.
